About the event
In recent decades, the employment participation of young people has decreased in most parts of the OECD member states, and at the same time there has been an increase in the group of young people who are neither studying nor working (i.e. not in employment, education or training (NEET)). A similar development has taken place in Iceland, and Varða - the labor market research institute has conducted two studies on this group. At this lunch meeting, Adda Guðrún Gylfadóttir, a researcher at Várða, will present the results of the research and discuss improvements in the issues of young people in this situation. On the one hand, it is an analysis of data from Statistics Iceland on the extent and nature of the NEET group, which was funded by the Immigration Development Fund. However, Adda Guðrún will present the results of a qualitative study on the situation of young women of foreign origin who are outside the labor market and school. That study was funded by the Icelandic Equality Fund.
The results of Värda's research show that the number of inactive young people is closely related to the position on the labor market. Factors such as gender, age, level of education, socio-economic status of parents and family structure also influence whether young people are likely to belong to the NEET group or not. Focus group interviews with women of foreign origin revealed that they face multiple obstacles in Icelandic society.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 27 at 12:30 via Zoom and is open to everyone. Translation into English is offered, and to use it, you have to click on the small globe that appears in the bar at the bottom of the screen and select interpretation. You can select "mute original sound" to hear only the interpreter. Kristín Heba Gísladóttir, executive director of Värda, is the moderator.
